JCP calls for peaceful resolution of Tibet question

The Japanese Communist Party on April 3 sent a letter to Chinese President Hu Jintao calling for the peaceful resolution of the Tibet question through talks. The following is the text of the letter signed by JCP Chair Shii Kazuo:

We are concerned over the present situation relating to the Tibet question, in which the escalation of the turmoil and violence and crackdown on them might lead to a rise in casualties.

In order to prevent a further exacerbation of the situation, we call for a dialogue between the Chinese government and representatives of the Dalai Lama aimed at finding a peaceful resolution to the Tibet question.

We believe that it is important for the dialogue to take place based on the position shared by both sides, that Tibet is part of China.

I convey to you our disagreement with any political attempt to link this question to the upcoming Olympics because it is incompatible with the spirit of the Olympics as a “sports festival”.
