Koike attends Mindan’s New Year party

Japanese Communist Party Secretariat Head Koike Akira on January 12 attended a New Year reception in Tokyo hosted by the Korean Residents Union in Japan (Mindan) Central Headquarters.

Mindan President Oh Gongtae in his greeting speech expressed his concern about the current difficult situation regarding Japan-South Korea relations, which emerged in December 2016, and its impact on Korean residents in Japan. He stressed that he will work even harder to strengthen friendship between the two countries. In addition, he emphasized the importance of efforts working to eliminate hate speech actions.

Along with other political party representatives, Koike delivered a speech as a guest.

Stating that this year marks 70 years since the postwar Constitution came into force, Koike expressed his determination to work hard to establish a government and society which make full use of the Constitution and achieve true reconciliation and friendship with people in other nations, including Asian nations.

Regarding the wartime Japanese military “comfort women” issue, Koike pointed out that the fact that the Japanese and South Korean governments reached an agreement on this issue at the end of 2015 is only a starting point for the settlement of the issue. He said that the Japanese government should apologize for its past human rights violations against Korean victims and make efforts to solve the issue in a rational manner in cooperation with the Korean government.

In addition to Koike, JCP members of the House of Representatives Kasai Akira and Kokuta Keiji also attended the reception. The three had friendly conversations with Japanese and foreign guests such as South Korean Ambassador to Japan Lee Joon-gyu and the head of the South Korea-Japan parliamentarians’ league Suh Chung-won.
