JCP elects new leadership

April 12, 2016
The Japanese Communist Party 5th Central Committee Plenum on April 11 relieved Yamashita Yoshiki (House of Councilors member) of his duty as secretariat head for health reasons and elected Koike Akira (House of Councilors member and currently JCP vice chair) to the position. Yamashita will assume the post of vice chair. With Tamura Tomoko (House of Councilors member) joining, the number of JCP vice chairpersons will total six, including Ichida Tadayoshi (House of Councilors member), Ogata Yasuo, Hiroi Nobuko, and Hamano Tadao. Shii Kazuo will remain in his post as JCP chair.

Shii in the concluding remarks renewed his determination, saying, “I will try my hardest together with the new leadership to fulfill my obligations and to gain the trust of all the JCP members as well as a wide range of people in the upcoming House of Councilors election, a historic political battle which will determine the future of Japan.”

Yamashita said, “I am sorry I cannot continue my duties as secretariat head at a time when the joint struggle by opposition parties is dramatically increasing. But, in the long run, what is more important for me is to contribute to the party over a longer period of time. From now on, I want to contribute to the party as a vice chair in Diet activities.”

Koike expressed his determination to advance party interests by saying, “I will work even harder to expand opposition parties’ joint efforts.”

At a press conference held after the 5th CC Plenum, Tamura said, “As a Dietwoman and as a party representative, I’d like to talk to as many people as possible, including childrearing parents of my age, to broaden my ties with them. I will fully commit myself to sharing vice chair tasks.”
